– The Horizon School Division Board of Education has approved the school year calendar for 2021-2022. The calendar can be viewed on the Horizon School Division website, at horizonsd.ca
Earlier this school year, Horizon staff submitted feedback through a ThoughtExchange survey, which asked for thoughts on how the year was going and what could be done to provide further support for their work. Through this survey, staff indicated a need for more time to prepare to meet the needs of students. Horizon's Board and senior leadership carefully considered the ThoughtExchange feedback from staff, and as a result, Horizon's school year calendar for 2021-2022 will now include five "Personal Professional Days" (PPD) throughout the year. These PPD – occuring on October 1, December 10, February 11, April 1, and May 6 – will be days of no school for students.
Personal Professional Days will afford students and families more time related to their families and less time travelling to and from school. The calendar includes an increase in the amount of instructional time for students. This is accomplished by adding 10 minutes to each school day, for a total of 325 instructional minutes per day. PPD will allow teachers and support staff more time dedicated to their work and other tasks that may have otherwise posed a challenge to accomplish within regular hours.
"We have great partnerships with groups like the Horizon Teachers' Association, CUPE, and our School Community Councils, which makes our calendar development ande consultation processes very efficient," said Horizon's Director of Education, Kevin C. Garinger. "This year, we had the added benefit of our staff ThoughtExchange feedback to guide our planning. We heard staff loud and clear, and we are happy to provide the new PPD to support their work. Horizon staff have given so much over the last 12 months, and we are proud to support them and our students."
The process for developing Horizon's calendar involves consultation with all staff, School Community Councils, and employee groups like the Horizon Teachers' Association and CUPE. Stakeholder feedback and a proposed calendar are then presented to Horizon's Board of Education for review and approval. The Board held a special meeting on March 22 to review and approve the calendar for 2021-2022
